Changes to Personal Tax Amendments/Adjustments and Online Services

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced that it is now possible to change a personal tax return online after filing.

This is beneficial as the process typically takes two weeks, while paper requests can take up to eight weeks.

One option is to use the "Change my return in My Account" service, which allows users to request changes for the previous 10 calendar years. If the tax return was filed using NETFILE-certified software, the "ReFILE" service can be used to request changes for 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020 returns.

EFILE service providers can also use ReFILE to request changes for their clients. After the request is reviewed, the CRA will send a notice of redetermination (NOR) indicating the changes made to the tax return or a letter explaining why the changes were not made. It is important to keep receipts and documents for at least six years after filing. If you haven't filed your 2023 tax return, it is still necessary to determine your eligibility for benefit and credit payments, such as the Canada child benefit, goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit, Canada Carbon Rebate, and disability tax credit.
